YALDAH Magazine Unveils First Torah Art Contest
11 May 2008
Sharon, Mass. – May 11, 2008 – YALDAH Magazine, a magazine written, edited and published by Jewish girls, today announced its first Torah Art Contest. To enter the contest, participants need to choose a verse from the Tanach, which includes Torah (the Bible), Nevi’im (Prophets) and Kesuvim (Scriptures). Then, they may illustrate what the pasuk means to them using any artistic medium, such as painting, drawing, collage, photography or sculpture.
Leah Larson, the 17-year old editor and founder of YALDAH Magazine, said, “This contest is an opportunity for girls to put their thoughts, feelings and essentially their soul into a piece of art relating to a portion of the Tanach that has special meaning for them. They may not have a final product in mind when they start preparing their artwork. In fact, we encourage the girls to be creative and enjoy the process of developing something visual.”
The contest is open to Jewish girls ages 8-15. Entries must be received by June 30th, 2008 and winners will be published in the fall 2008 issue. First prize is a beautiful three-volume Stone Edition Tanach from Artscroll Publishers. Second prize is an original painting by Sheva Chaya Shaiman. Third prize is an assortment of art supplies from Fantasia Pencil.
The entries will be judged by Sheva Chaya Shaiman, an artist who studied visual art, art history and painting at Princeton University. After graduating in 1977, she immigrated to Israel where the land, the people and rich traditions of spiritual teachings brought a new deeper dimension to her work. Samples of her work can be viewed at www.shevachaya.com.
Entries along with the participant’s name, address, phone number and email address may be sent to Torah Art Contest, c/o YALDAH Magazine, P.O. Box 215, Sharon, MA 02067.
